This study presents the experience of Hospi’Homes, a project supporting the socio-professional integration of migrants, implemented by Le Monde des Possibles in partnership with our member IRFAM. One of the project’s main objectives was to prevent racism and promote diversity in residential care homes across Wallonia through arts-based interventions.
Drawing on an in-depth assessment of racism and discrimination in participating care homes, based on interviews conducted within the institutions, the study explains why artistic practices were chosen as a tool for intervention. It describes the visual arts workshops led by Alexandra Briois, as well as the music and rhythm workshops facilitated by Jackson Muhindo and Isabelle Vanhollebeke, and highlights their impact on residents, staff members, and the participating institutions.
The document also examines the key factors that contributed to the success of this approach, while discussing the challenges encountered and its limitations. It concludes with practical recommendations for artists working in healthcare settings and for care home managers interested in developing similar initiatives.
More broadly, the publication demonstrates how artistic practices can foster inclusion, celebrate diversity, and help challenge systemic racism within care institutions. It is rooted in the principles of lifelong learning and aims to promote active citizenship, collective empowerment, and a more inclusive and supportive society.
