Diversité en milieu de travail: an IRFAM Study on the Contributions of Intercultural Mediation

Diversite en milieu de travail IRFAM Study

Our member IRFAM has published a new study focusing on tensions related to diversity in the workplace and on intercultural mediation as a tool for managing and preventing these tensions. The analysis highlights the importance of appropriate tools to foster inclusive and harmonious working environments.

Understanding diversity-related tensions

In a context where cultural, linguistic, and social diversity is increasingly present in workplaces, the IRFAM study examines potential sources of tension between colleagues or teams. These tensions may arise from differences in norms, communication styles, cultural representations, or perceptions of work, and can sometimes undermine cohesion, collective efficiency, and the well-being of those involved.

The analysis emphasizes that such situations are not necessarily conflicts, but that they require particular attention and appropriate mechanisms to be transformed into opportunities for learning and constructive collaboration.

Intercultural mediation: a tool to facilitate inclusion

The study highlights intercultural mediation as a relevant approach to help organizations better manage and prevent diversity-related tensions. This approach makes it possible to:

  • Facilitate dialogue between colleagues by overcoming cultural misunderstandings;
  • Shed light on the underlying logics behind behaviours perceived as sources of tension;
  • Promote co-constructed solutions that take different perspectives into account;
  • Encourage the development of an inclusive working environment based on respect and collective effectiveness.

Among the recommendations formulated, IRFAM emphasizes the importance of:

  • Training internal stakeholders (HR managers, line managers, and volunteer colleagues) in identifying and managing intercultural tensions;
  • Institutionalizing spaces for dialogue and mediation mechanisms accessible to all;
  • Valuing diversity as an asset by supporting teams in developing a better mutual understanding of differences.
