Barka – support center for Ukrainian refugees in Poland

Barka

In Polish, “Barka” means mutuality.

After 35 years of supporting those at risk of social exclusion, the Barka team, moved by the situation in Ukraine, opened their homes and hearts to their neighbors in February 2022.

A few days after the war began, Barka prepared emergency spaces at its headquarters in Poznań. Additional rooms were renovated, goods were collected, and financial resources were organized.

Barka collaborated with the Wielkopolska Voivode to provide accommodations, assist with official matters, and offer free Polish lessons.

The first four months of aid were funded by Barka’s resources and public donations.

Once the situation in Poznań stabilized, Barka refocused on creating social bonds for those in need. Their activities aimed to build bridges between different communities and social groups.

Over the next two years, Barka cooperated with various entities, including local authorities, international organizations, and NGOs.

Thanks to financial support, over 20 Ukrainian assistants joined the Barka team to help connect with refugees, providing vouchers, transport cards, psychological support, legal advice, translations, Polish lessons, medical care, and housing assistance.

Gradually, mutual understanding and friendships grew. Meetings, workshops, and integration outings helped break down barriers. Children quickly realized that despite language differences, their passions and humor were alike. As adults overcame their fears, mutual care and friendship emerged, creating deeply moving experiences.

In terms of social and professional activation, refugees completed internships, participated in vocational courses, joined mentoring programs, and established NGOs. Many engaged with the Social Integration Centre and social enterprises supported by Barka.

In 2024, Barka also promoted solidarity economy tools among social leaders with refugee experience in Poland and Ukraine, and collaborated with local governments in Ukraine, including in Lviv and Vinnytsia.
